CHAPTER NINE
In the morning grey skies were weeping for Laurel, and glad that at least the heavens understood how she felt, she breakfasted in her room and then quickly resumed work.
The library was one room more redolent of Dimitri than any other room in the house. Despite the daily airing it received the aroma of Havana cigars hung on the leather chairs and the velvet curtains at the windows, making it all too easy to envisage him sitting in a big chair beside the marble fireplace or wandering along the booklined shelves to find an hour of relaxation in someone else’s thoughts.
Though she made an effort to concentrate on what she was doing he kept coming into her mind, and she was glad when Andri unexpectedly walked in.
‘I saw your friend this morning,’ she smiled, perching on the arm of a chair. T went to the Embassy to get a visa and bumped into him. Apparently he’s always there in the morning to see if there’s any news. He’s very charming, isn’t he?’
‘Very. As a matter of fact he found me this job.'
‘Did you know him in England?’
‘No.’ Only as she saw the studied indifference on the Greek girl’s face did Laurel’s suspicions grow. No one could talk about someone yet look so disinterested unless they were trying to hide the exact opposite. 'He isn’t my boyfriend, you know. We only see a lot of each other because we’re both British.'
‘I see.’ No words could have been more noncommittal, but Andri was not so successful with her expression, for it shone with relief. 'I'm giving a party on Friday and I’d like both of you to come.’
Laurel’s heart, gave a painful thump. ‘Is there - are you celebrating anything special?'
‘Not particularly. I like giving parties!'
‘I’m not sure if I should come. Mr. Janis might not like it.’
‘What mightn’t he like?’ a voice asked, and Laurel turned to see him at the door. What an aptitude he had for arriving at the wrong time!
‘I was inviting Laurel to my party on Friday,’ Andri explained, ‘but she thinks you’d object to her coming.’
His mouth tightened and temper was so rampant on his face that Andri flung Laurel an anxious look and walked to the door. ‘I’ll go and say hello to your mother, Dimitri, and wait for you in the car.’
The door closed behind her and the man came farther into the room, his steps muffled on the Persian rug so that he appeared like a character in a silent film.
‘Were you worried about accepting Andri’s invitation because you thought I mightn’t want to see you socially, or was it the other way around?’
She stared at him with frightened eyes. Seeing him for the first time since she knew she loved him, she was morbidly afraid of giving herself away, and she cowered back in her chair.
'I-I don’t know what you mean.'
‘I mean that perhaps you do not wish to be at the same party as me!’
‘Oh no! Why ever should you think that?’
‘Because of the way you.
